Curriculum

At Peartree the curriculum is taught in ways appropriate to children’s ages and abilities, and planning by the teachers takes account of Government Statutes and School’s own Policies and Schemes of Work. All teachers establish a timetable that varies across the year to ensure appropriate time and attention to all subjects are made.

Assessment

Staff maintain a record of the work they have achieved, notes about their attitudes, strengths and weaknesses.

At the end of the academic year this information is passed onto the new teacher.
Children take formal tests twice a year, allowing us to track the children’s progress and to set individual targets for them.

At Peartree we aim to identify, assess and make provision for any child who may have special educational needs as early as possible.

The Curriculum at Peartree comprises:

Core subjects

Foundation subjects

  • Geography
  • Art
  • Physical Education (P.E)
  • Drama

Literacy

The national Literacy Strategy provides the basis of Literacy teaching. This provides a framework for teaching the essentials of the subject from year to year through a daily Literacy Hour including talking and listening, drama, role play, reading and writing and is supported through the use of Interactive white boards.

Mathematics

In the teaching of Mathematics at Peartree, the National Numeracy Framework provides a school wide basis for teaching the essentials of Number and other elements of Maths. In our teaching of mathematics we aim to, ensure that each child develops secure and efficient methods of calculation, develops confidence and enjoyment at using mathematics and provide opportunities for mathematical thinking and discussion through practical and problem solving activities.

Science

At Peartree we encourage children to investigate and develop their own learning through stimulating, practical experiences that build on the child's natural sense of curiosity of the world around them. We develop their questioning skills through exciting investigative work including visits linked to theatre groups, animals, museums and whole school science days in line with the National Curriculum requirements.

Information-Communication Technology (ICT)

Computer technology is the main facet of this subject.  Within the school every classroom has a computer, printer and an interactive whiteboard, the school also has a 16 workstation computer suite. All of the school's computers are connected to a network that supplies them with a broad and current range of software, as well as constant access to the internet. On top of this all teachers are supplied with a laptop computer.

Peartree recognises ICT as an important enabler for communication and therefore uses it across the curriculum. The technological skills connected with word processing, data handling, desktop publishing, e-mail and research via the internet, are all recognised as essential in preparing your children for their future. The school also has a host of other ICT equipment including; “Digital blue” video cameras, standard video and still cameras, digital microscopes, CD players, Tape recorders, Overhead projectors and Language masters.

Religious Education

At Peartree, the teaching of religious education is non-denominational and in accordance with the Hertfordshire Agreed Syllabus.

The following areas are provided at levels appropriate to the child as directed lessons, informal conversations as well as being integrated through normal class work:

  • RESPECT for THEMSELVES
  • RESPECT for OTHER PEOPLE
  • RESPECT for the NATURAL WORLD

We help our children to become aware of their own feelings and emotions and to understand feelings and emotions in other people.

The school promotes a warm and caring community based approach helping to develop compassion and respect for each and every individual. Children learn to be responsible for themselves as well as for others.

Understanding Religions
Children are encouraged to find out about other faiths and in reflection of our multi-faith society, six faiths are encountered, Islam, Hinduism, Sikhism, Judaism and Buddhism, but Christianity represents the major faith taught.

An act of collective worship is held daily, and aims to be a positive and rewarding learning experience for all children.

These acts of worship cover aspects that are applicable to broad Christian values. Presented at a level that can be understood at the Primary stage they promote in favour of sharing, helping, caring, tolerance, kindness and against bullying and racial discrimination.

Parents have the right to withdraw their children from religious education and collective Worship. Parents who do not wish their child(ren) to participate should contact the Headteacher. During the acts of worship arrangements for these children’s supervision may have to be made with the parents concerned.

Personal, Social and Health Education

Learning is not only about facts and figures. Peartree has a caring and friendly atmosphere, we create an environment in which children feel happy and secure. In so doing we encourage children to be considerate and feel that they belong to the school.

Teaching staff work as a caring and professional team, sensitive to the emotional and social needs of the children in their charge.  They consider carefully the pastoral care of the children in order to ensure their all-round education.

The class teacher is able to establish a special rapport with the children in his/her class and takes an interest in the “whole child” not just a child’s educational needs.

Special Educational Needs

At Peartree we aim to identify, assess and make provision for any child who may have special educational needs as early as possible. We also aim to minimise barriers to learning and participation and provide appropriately for a diversity of needs.

We recognise, value and celebrate all achievements made by the children. We work in partnership with parents/carers in supporting their child’s education. SEN provision is managed by two Special Educational Needs Co-ordinators (SENCOS).

Support
Most children’s special needs will be met by in-house provision. They may receive extra support through an intervention programme delivered by a teacher, or a teaching assistant, either 1:1 or more usually in a small group of between three and six children. They may be provided with extra or special resources. The school also receives advice from outside professionals (e.g. Educational  Psychologist, Advisory Teachers) to help make appropriate provision for children with more complex needs.

A very few children (about 1-2 across the whole school) will need an even higher level of support. This will be provided by the County Council through Statementing Records.

The provision made for children with SEN is in line with the County Policy and the SEN Code of Practice as set out in the Education Act 1996. This provision is recorded on the schools provision map and sometimes in an Individual Educational Plan (IEP) which is reviewed termly by teachers, parents/carers, the child and if appropriate an outside professional.
